Trauma is defined as a distressing event in which an individual is threatened emotionally, physically or psychologically. Most individuals would have some experience of a traumatic event in their lives, such as neglect, accident, abuse, sudden death of a loved one, violence or even natural disaster. People usually recover from trauma with time, and support from family and friends. For others it may lead to post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety or even ongoing problems with relationships and self-esteem.
Psychotherapy is the most effective form of treatment for healing from effects of trauma. Two established approaches to cope with trauma are Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
At Incontact our counsellors are experienced in helping you manage your trauma using both EMDR & CBT.
EMDR specifically has been considered as one of the important breakthroughs in psychotherapy. In 2013 WHO recognized EMDR & CBT as the only psychotherapies recommended for children, adults and adolescents with PTSD.
(EMDR) therapy is an effective psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. We sometimes assume that emotional pain needs long time to heal or it cannot heal at all. But we all know that when we cut our finger, our body works to close the wound. Repeated irritation or foreign object can cause pain and slow the healing process
Similarly with EMDR therapy, our mind works to heal from the psychological trauma. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound can deepen and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. EMDR helps to remove the psychological block to resume healing.
EMDR therapy activates brains natural healing processes to deal effectively with issues like:
• Childhood hurts
• Low Self-Esteem
• Physical, Emotional and Sexual Abuse
• Psychological Stress
• Conflicts in relationships
• Feelings of powerlessness
To date, this therapy has helped many thousands of people of all ages relieve many types of psychological stress.
