What Is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, also known as ACT, is a mindfulness-based behavioural therapy that challenges the ground rules of most Western psychology. ACT aims to create a rich and meaningful life while accepting the pain that inevitably goes with it. It has been proven effective with many conditions, such as depression, OCD, workplace stress, chronic pain, anxiety, PTSD, anorexia, and even schizophrenia.

It is important to note that ACT does not have symptom reduction as a goal. Instead, this therapy focuses on transforming our relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings so that we no longer perceive them as “symptoms”. ACT offers clients an alternative to experiential avoidance through various therapeutic interventions.

The two main processes in ACT are developing acceptance of unwanted private experiences which are out of personal control and commitment and action towards living a valued life.

The core principles of ACT, which are used to develop psychological flexibility, are:

1) Diffusion

  • In a state of cognitive fusion, we are caught up in language, and we fuse with our thoughts, which enormously impact our behaviour.
  • In a state of cognitive diffusion, we can step back and observe the language without being caught up in it.

2) Acceptance

  • We make room for unpleasant feelings, sensations, urges, and other private experiences.

3) Contact With The Present Moment

  • You bring full awareness to your here-and-now experience with openness, interest and receptiveness.

4) The Observing Self

  • Accessing a transcendent sense of self, a continuity of consciousness that is unchanging, ever-present, and impervious to harm.
  • You experience that you are not your feelings, thoughts, and memories.

5) Values

  • We are clarifying what is most important to you.

6) Committed Action

  • You are setting goals, guided by your values, and taking effective action to achieve them.
