Marriage is one of the longest and most significant relationships one can experience, where you go through developmental changes together, along with being an important part of an individual identity. However, most of us don’t learn how to foster healthy relationships. We may get into these long term commitments without understanding how important it is to explore topics like relationship management, parenting or finances in a relationship. Care must be taken to maintain the relationship long term and avoid the trappings of relationship distress. Therefore, we recommend that couples take time to learn essential relationship skills at the beginning of their relationship. The sooner couples know what it takes to redirect negative patterns, the less likely they will become maladaptive. At Incontact, we offer a Pre-Marital Counselling Course, which Cate Hoffernan, the director of Mayo Couples Counselling, founded. The three-hour personalised course was developed due to the need to learn how to do relationships in the most effective manner. It is designed to lay a solid foundation to build your marriage. You will be given an overview of thirteen crucial topics to compare how you relate to each other, your families, future goals, and how you handle conflict.
This course, facilitated by the skilled professionals at Incontact, encourages you to discover and discuss your views of thirteen critical areas of the relationship. Before the course, couples are asked to complete a questionnaire, which will be reviewed by the couple counsellor at Incontact to provide a course tailored to your specific relationship needs. During the course, you will be given interactive opportunities to connect and understand the underlying causes of relationship distress and how to avoid these pitfalls. You will be encouraged to learn the skills it takes to navigate, manage and celebrate your differences to make room for both and how to support each other’s personal development best.
This course is available and helpful to any couple in a primary relationship, regardless of religion, race, culture or sexual orientation. The course adapts to your unique relationship, and the questionnaire will allow you to reflect on what you and your partner most need from this opportunity based on your answers. The whole course will be delivered privately by an experienced couple counsellor, who you can also visit again during your marriage for whatever you need. Sometimes, couples identify issues through this course which they can continue to address through our Pre-Marital Counselling service.
All resources acquired during the course are for you to keep and can be used as an ongoing guide to stay on track. Some of these resources include handouts on important topics such as guidelines for a happy relationship, good relationship practices, tips on healthy communication, how to handle difficult discussions as well as how to handle finances.
Not many people are cognizant of the importance of awareness in relationships. Incontact’s Pre-Marital Counselling Course can help couples to understand the maladaptive relational patterns that they might have learnt from their upbringing or culture so that they can begin working towards changing them for the sake of a healthier relationship. This could be an opportunity to unlearn some of our old relationship patterns and learn positive healthy mechanisms.
At Incontact, our counsellors are dedicated to helping you and your partner understand each other. We take into consideration each individual’s understanding of both themselves and the relationship so that the skills and resources available in the course will be effectively translated into a stronger relationship.
My fiance and I came across Incontact Counselling while researching for a pre-marital counselling course. We signed up for the 3 hour course with Steven, who was responsive and accommodating to our schedule. We were both nervous and excited as we didn’t know what to expect but were pleasantly surprised by how Steven managed to make us feel comfortable from the get go. He covered several important topics (such as healthy conflict resolution, prioritising the r/s, potential issues to look out for etc.) and it was extremely educational for us! Loads to muse on after the session. Would definitely recommend to any other couples thinking about settling down.
