On effortless friendships

Friendship is often painted as the simplest bond we’ll ever have—natural, easy, and without demand. But over the years, I’ve learned that this belief can quietly erode the very connections we value most.

1 Story—The myth of effortless friendship

Romantic relationships are expected to take work. Parenting, of course, is hard. Careers? Absolutely. But friendships? They’re supposed to flow effortlessly.

We’ve all heard it: “If it takes effort, maybe the friendship isn’t meant to be.”

It’s a phrase that slips easily into our cultural narrative, whispered in self-help books, memes, and casual advice. I once sat with a client grieving the quiet unraveling of a decade-long friendship. The calls had dwindled. Messages went unanswered. Life stages diverged—marriage, children, career moves. She said to me, “If I have to chase, maybe it’s not real.” The weight of her words stayed with me. Beneath them lay a painful belief: that effort cheapens friendship rather than sustains it.

But here’s the truth:

Friendship is not meant to be a free-floating, maintenance-free bond.

Think about it. Friendships are built on time, attention, and intention. They exist in the spaces we choose to nurture them. Left unattended, even the most natural of connections can wither.

We don’t judge a garden for needing water. We don’t dismiss a violinist for needing practice. Why then do we shame friendships for needing care?

Part of the myth comes from nostalgia. Childhood friendships often felt “effortless” because proximity and shared schedules did the heavy lifting. We saw each other daily at school, in the neighborhood, or at university.

Adulthood strips away that scaffolding. Careers scatter us. Families absorb our hours. Suddenly, if we want friendship, we must choose it. That choosing, over and over again, is the work.

Friendship is not meant to be frictionless. It is meant to be tended. And the tending is not a sign of weakness but of value.

1 Insight—Effort is a form of love

When we invest in friendship, we’re not forcing it. We’re showing it matters.

The willingness to text first, to carve time for coffee, to check in when someone goes quiet—this isn’t proof that the friendship is fragile. It’s proof that it’s alive.

2 Tools for tending friendship in practice

Redefine effort as care, not burden

Instead of thinking “I shouldn’t have to try this hard,” reframe it: This effort is how I express value. Ask yourself, “What small gesture can I make this week to water this connection?”

Create scaffolding for connection

Don’t rely only on spontaneity. Effort doesn’t always mean grand gestures. Sometimes it’s structure. A monthly dinner. A shared playlist. A recurring voice note exchange. Rituals create continuity when life gets crowded.

Nine years into Incontact, I’ve witnessed something again and again: people often underestimate the power of friendships in sustaining wellbeing. Yet when they pause to look back, it’s the friendships—those tended with patience and choice—that anchor them most.
